Hilary Barry
Hilary Barry is a contemporary British painter whose work explores the emotional and atmospheric qualities of landscape. Born in Brynmawr, South Wales, she grew up surrounded by the contrasting terrains of industrial valleys and sweeping natural scenery — influences that continue to shape the tonal depth and introspective character of her paintings. Barry studied at the Bournville School of Art and the Byam Shaw School of Art in London before completing an MA in Fine Art at Middlesex University. After more than twenty years in education, she became a full time artist in 2005.
Now based in Kessingland on the Suffolk coast, Hilary draws inspiration from the region’s expansive skies, shifting light, and coastal quietness. Her work blends abstraction and representation, creating atmospheric “inner landscapes” that evoke memory rather than depict specific locations. Working primarily in oils, she builds her paintings slowly through layered glazes, textured surfaces, and intuitive mark making. This process gives her work a contemplative quality, inviting viewers to engage emotionally with colour, space, and the traces of time embedded in each piece.
Hilary exhibits widely across the UK, including at the Mall Galleries, Espacio Gallery, Boundary Arts, The Cut, Ferini Gallery, and The George Farnham Gallery. She is an active member of Easterly Artists and Suffolk Open Studios, contributing to the region’s vibrant creative community. Her paintings are held in private collections nationally and internationally.
Rooted in memory yet shaped by the Suffolk landscape, Hilary’s work offers a quiet, resonant exploration of place, emotion, and the enduring human impulse to make meaning through paint. clarity and restraint.
