Ruth McCabe

Ruth McCabe is a Suffolk based contemporary artist whose work is defined by a deep sensitivity to landscape, atmosphere and the quiet emotional charge of place. Working primarily in mixed media, watercolour and collages, she creates pieces that hover between representation and abstraction, inviting viewers to experience the land not as a fixed scene but as a living, shifting presence.

Born and raised in post war industrialised West Yorkshire and now long settled in Suffolk, McCabe brings a dual heritage to her practice: the dramatic land and cityscapes of moorland fells and hard working mills of her early years and the gentler, mutable skies of East Anglia. Her work often explores the tension between these environments, the abstract watercolours, developed over 10 years, earning wide admiration for their luminosity and emotional depth, capturing fleeting moments with remarkable clarity and restraint.

McCabe’s process is intuitive and exploratory. She frequently works in series, allowing themes to unfold gradually – coastal edges, estuary mudflats, winter fields and the fragile boundaries between land and water. Her collages, in particular, with their gestural mark making, and subtle textural shifts evoke memory, weather, the passage of time and express her love of key places.

Her work has been exhibited across Suffolk and the wider region, and she is recognised for her thoughtful engagement with the local arts community. Collectors value her ability to distil landscape into something both familiar and dreamlike, offering a contemplative space that resonates long after viewing.

Ruth McCabe continues to develop her practice from her Suffolk studio, producing work that reflects a lifelong fascination with land, light and the quiet stories held within the natural world.
